From Wednesday 10 June 2026, all FTP connections to our hosting servers must use encrypted FTP, also known as FTPS or FTPES.
Plain, unencrypted FTP connections will no longer be accepted.
We are making this change to enhance the security of our hosting services. Plain FTP sends information over the network without encryption, which can expose customer passwords and website data on unencrypted or untrusted networks.
Who this affects
This affects customers who upload or manage website files using FTP software such as:
- FileZilla
- WinSCP (specifically FTP, not SFTP/SCP protocols)
- Cyberduck
- Automated deployment tools using FTP
Customers already using FTPS, FTPES, or SFTP do not need to change unless their FTP client is currently configured to allow plain FTP.
Required FTP settings
Please update your FTP client to use the following settings:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Protocol | FTP |
| Encryption | Require explicit FTP over TLS / FTPES |
| Port | 21 |
| Host | Your assigned hosting server name, for example cpanel10.ip6net.net, or your website domain name |
| Username | Your FTP or cPanel username |
| Password | Your FTP or cPanel password |
Do not select plain FTP.
SFTP is separate from FTP/FTPS and is not affected by this change.
FileZilla settings
In FileZilla, open Site Manager and use the following settings:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Protocol | FTP - File Transfer Protocol |
| Host | Your assigned hosting server name |
| Port | 21 |
| Encryption | Require explicit FTP over TLS |
| Logon Type | Normal |
Then enter your FTP username and password as usual.
FileZilla certificate warning
The first time you connect using FileZilla, you may see an Unknown certificate prompt.
This is expected. FileZilla uses its own trust-on-first-use certificate store rather than relying only on your operating system’s certificate store.
SFTP and SSH keys
This change does not affect SFTP.
SFTP remains available where enabled, and SSH keys can still be configured from your customer cPanel account.
Troubleshooting
If your FTP connection stops working after this change, please check that:
- Your FTP client is set to Require explicit FTP over TLS or FTPES
- You are using port 21
- You are using your assigned hosting server hostname
- Your FTP client is up to date and supports TLS
